CommentI first sighted this Black Kite perched on a spar near the Little River. As I watched, it suddenly took off with the morning sun catching both its eye and the distinctive wide-fanned tail and pale band across the upper wings. More frequently photographed from below but here with a full view of its upperwings as it moves from its perch. Just one of the many different raptors that can be seen reconnoitring the lakes, wetlands, and grasslands of the Werribee TP at the moment. Only a few moments later, a Brown Falcon landed on the same spar. Apparently the Black Kite is one of the most common raptors across the whole world, to be sighted not only in Australia but also in Africa, Asia and Europe. Unlike most other species, they enjoy themselves in the midst of a bushfire, seizing the opportunity to drop from the air and seize small creatures fleeing from the flame. Clouds have their silver linings, bushfires their raptor prey.
