CommentWhile attempting a photo of subspecies of whistler in the shadows, I could hear the sweet tones of Scarlet Honeyeaters nearby. I changed settings from full manual to shutter priority because I knew I would not be afforded the time to adjust from shadows to sunset light in the few seconds I might get if he showed up. The sun was setting behind the hill of scattered trees offering different light every other second. He turned up. I managed to get a quick burst then dissatisfied with motion/focus/noise adjusted the ISO and used the shutter delay so as to assist me to keep the camera still. The bird was pumping out his tune so aggressively it was moving the tiny branches he was sitting on. After about 5 attempts he was gone and this was the best.
I ran the shot through Topaz sharpen and Denoise. I find this species hard to get close to and difficult to present in sharp focus. The crop is such that a second bird (out of focus below) has been cropped out (I was trying to get them both) which means this fellow is slightly high in the photo without further cropping. Light Room edit - Light: I have reduced yellow white balance -2, saturation to red -3 and blue -10 as I felt the natural RAW shot looked over coloured for the red/blue combination. I feel the soft yellow sunset light gives mood but discolours the subject unnaturally. I have refrained from strengthening the contrast as the highlights start to blow, so adjusted black slider to -12 to give the shot slightly more strength. Any comments to improve my approach or edit are appreciated.
