| Comment | Small birds, long shadows. I found these Welcome Swallows, part of a huge flock on Lake Borrie, warming themselves up on a lichen-encrusted bluestone embankment. It was not long after dawn on a very cold clear morning, with the sun so low that even the most height-challenged of birds casts a very long shadow. To warm themselves up, the Swallows are puffing themselves up, displaying their beautiful blue-black shawls and rufous neck scarves. They seemed almost as rugged up as I was myself in taking the photo, puffy-jacketed, beanied, and fumbling to operate the icy metal of my monopod and camera with my gloved paws. Despite my closeness, they seemed disinclined to fly off. I was being Welcomed, it seemed, into the warmth of their huddled gathering. | ||||||||||||||||||
