CommentThis was my first sighting of a Dusky Woodswallow, welcoming me into the start of a walk around the never disappointing Crusoe Reservoir near Bendigo. It was perched on a spar on the edge of the waters, seeming unperturbed by my presence. The characteristic white leading edge to its closed wing can just be seen, distinguishing it from other woodswallows. Most Dusky Swallows are deep brown but Birdlife Australia’s profile of the species notes that they can be a “smoky deep brown to grey bird”. This one is certainly on the grey spectrum. They have a soft gentle look to accompany their evocative name but apparently can be quite fierce to rivals and potential predators during breeding season. Their zweet calls are loud but they also sometimes engage in more melodious soft twittering when perched. While still secure in Victoria, Dusky Swallows are apparently vulnerable in NSW. Even so, the Friends of the Crusoe Reservoir have indicated on their Crusoe Reservoir Birdlist that Dusky Woodswallows are declining there. My first, but hopefully not my last, sighting of this beautiful bird.
