CommentI have frequently struggled with Tern identification and was particularly confused by these Terns since they had the yellow beaks of a Crested Tern but seemed to lack the all important crest itself. With the help of the Birdlife Photography bird identification forum site, this Tern, seen preparing to make a dive, has definitely been confirmed as a Crested Tern because of its yellow beak , black legs, and rounded fanned tail. Thinking about the crest issue, perhaps it does make sense for a Crested Tern to streamline itself for its kamikaze dives by flattening down its crest, all the better to catch a fish before it has time to flee. I should, of course, have looked more closely at the illustrations in the CSIRO Australian Bird Guide where it shows Crested Terns in flight with crests flattened down.
