CommentImage specific (03.06.BiL_BOZ7595): The breeding seasons of 2013 and 2014 were god for Perth inner city Lake Claremont. Each year, good rains had filled the lake and kept it a high water levels until the following autumn, and though only a small lake, a plethora of waterbirds turned up to breed here. So also at least two pairs of Hoary-headed Grebes; here, a pair is seen in breeding plumage. I have not seen Hoary-headed Grebes at Lake Claremont in recent years, no doubt due to the water level being too low for the species. I think that the rusty red colour on the breast of the LH bird may be due to feather staining from the water, it’s been living in; normally, the breast of these grebes are not that intensely rufous coloured. We see the same phenomenon in marine cormorants, but I know from my native country of Denmark that also humus in bogs can stain feathers. The capture was taken on a dull and windy morning at 08:43.
