| Comment | Australasian Grebes are often to be found in the large expanse of wetland waters on the west side of Oak St in the Royal Park Wetlands. Easy to miss sometimes because of their inclination to take long dives. In this case, I noticed the chick first as it swum around in circles, looking this way and that. Then suddenly up popped the parent a little distance away and they quickly came together for the parent to feed it a titbit. The adult is in its very distinctive breeding plumage, with reddish-brown neck patch and black patch. The large chick for its part has its zebra like facial stripes, and lost no time in taking the morsel. The same routine went on for several minutes, with the parent diving and coming up with the goods. But then the parent decided enough was enough. It decided that the youngster needed to be taught to do its own diving and searching for food. So instead of bringing it food, the parent began forcing the chick under the water. | ||||||||||||||||||
