CommentNow that I have got to know, and always look forward to hearing, the lone lonely Grey Shrike-Thrush that has made its home in the Royal Park Wetlands in the heart of Melbourne, I am hearing and seeking out Shrike-Thrushes in many other places as their pure five-note pur-pur-pur-QUEE-YULE call (as Menkhorst et.al. describe it) resounds through the trees. So it was when I heard this one at the Chiltern Valley Dam No.2 in the Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park and tracked it down to this tree. Its beautiful grey and brown plumage is evident in the photo as the morning sunlight catches the Shrike-Thrust at the end of a burst of song, gleam in its eye. Even one of the much loved “three tenor” bird soloists of the Australian bush (alongside the Butcher Bird and Rufous Whistler) must take a rest sometimes.
