This deeply personal photo (long story) was taken on the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome. I’m interested to know peoples thoughts as I love this photo due to the story behind it but I’m finding it difficult to be objective! I do feel it could be cropped a bit tighter, but I have left it as is to show the environment.

Bob Young	2019-08-31 10:50:58	Hello Larissa, Sorry for being late in posting my comments, and I do agree with Ian in that it is difficult to fully evaluate a smaller image. Having said that, I do not see anything that is terribly wrong although there may be a couple of things you could consider which may improve the image. In saying that, I am mindful of 2 points you made in your comments - "This is a deeply personal photo" and "I love this photo". Generally we take photos for our own enjoyment or because we are being paid, participating in a competition or something similar where there are specific rules which must be followed, This is your personal record, so my advice is to let your memory be your guide. Is this the scene you remember or do you need to tweak it a bit? You said "I do feel it could be cropped a bit tighter" - I would agree for 2 reasons: 1. The rock in the bottom right is perhaps to bright and rather domineering, and 2. The bird is centered horizontally in the scene. I would like to see the birds eye closer to the right hand '1/3rd' line to better balance the image. Cropping a bit of the right hand side would also reduce the dominance of the rock. I think you could also try locally reducing the exposure of that rock. There is a risk that these edits may not retain the integrity of the image in so far as it adheres to your memory of the scene - in which case just delete the edits. Let us know if you try these edits and how you feel about their impact. If it is not what you wanted, give us some more detail of the improvements you would like to make and I am sure that we can offer more help. Good luck, Bob

I do agree with your comments and think these will improve the image re cropping it. This is the scene as I remember it, with the bird sitting on an outcrop of huge towering cliff face. This bird and I hung out for a week on the Dampier Peninsula but he wouldnt let me get too close, and as I had a 150mm lens (yes I know!!!), most of my images of him aren't great. We had been camping on top of the cliffs here for the week and had watched hump back whales from our camp chairs teaching their young to tail slap and breach, saw many birds of prey and shore birds. This image was taken on my last walk along the beach before we left later that morning. It was like he knew and was saying goodbye to me (which I know is ridiculous) as he flew straight over my head (I felt the wind!) and perched on this rock and he let me get right up close and get this photo. Takes me back there every time I see it :-)
