CommentThere are around 120 images of the Black Swan in the galleries. Of these, nearly ten per cent are of birds in flight, a high proportion. In general, the larger the bird the more likely it is to be captured in flight.
So, why add yet another Black Swan flight image to the BLP galleries?
The first reason is that the bird is checking out the photographer as it flies past. The second is the softening of the mist and early morning light on the water. The third is that the early morning light has a warming impact on the dark plumage.
I had the camera settings ready for this flight shot because I had noticed that one of the resident pair was swimming quickly towards two interlopers. The territory defender had its feathers puffed up and out - a signal from the Black Swan of aggression. It looked as if a fight or flight situation was developing. It turned out that flight was the preferred option.
The other main message from this image is that it pays to get up early and to be in position at dawn.
