CommentAround ten per cent of BLP gallery images of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo show some degree of erect cheek feathers.
This is an example of an extreme manifestation of this capability. Note that other feathers are puffed up as well.I am not sure of the function but it may be to reduce heat loss through the beak.
In this case it was early on a cold morning. The birds had just finished sunning themselves in a high perch and had flown down to start feeding in the oaks.
The bird landed quite close to me and was checking me out when this image was captured. From a photographic point of view I wanted to move around to my right to reduce the shadow on the back of the bird, increase the area cheek feathers visible in the photo while also eliminating the background foliage. I judged that if I moved the bird would fly off. Instead I took the image and within minutes the bird had moved into the foliage to feed.
