CommentThe Cockatiel aka the Weiro is an endemic, Australian bird. Generally, it occupies dryer habitats and open country of the bush, avoiding wooded areas. It is absent from the harshest, arid regions of The Outback, however, and from forests. Though a member of the cockatoo family, following molecular research it has been put into its own genus: ‘Nymphicus’. It is unusual by its small size and choice of habitat, but shares other features unique to cockatoos; sexual dimorphism is present. A nomadic bird, it follows rain and available food, foraging for seeds on the ground. Benefiting from grazier water stations in the bush, sometimes you can see a large flock at a single body of water, like a dam or a leaking water tank, where they come in to drink several times a day. You may also encounter it along roads after harvest time, where they forage on spilt wheat by the verge. In years of drought, they travel far and may be seen in unusual locations. Ninghan Station. Status: Least Concern
