CommentPatience and persistence paid off with this image. It was about my sixth successive dawn field trip to photograph Avocets. I had captured some nice images up to this point, but found it difficult to get isolated birds because of this species tendency to flock. Despite this, I had some amazing experiences laying in the water, watching Avocets wading and feeding around me. On this morning there was a bright pinkish-orange sunrise that shone some beautiful warm tones across the inlet. To my luck, a lone Avocet walked in front me at just the right angle to catch the early light, sweeping the shallows for food, and casting a stunning reflection. The pastel bokeh balls created by a flock of Avocets along the far shoreline reminded me of paint spots on an artist’s palette, in a scene that to me resembles a beautiful painting.
