CommentThis was my 3rd excursion to Orange Grove looking for, in particular, Elegant Parrots of the subspecies N. elegans carteri. This Time I was extremely fortunate, as 4 of these little parrots were feeding just off the track in their expected patch of young grasses and herbs. Upon seeing me, two flew away, but the other two, a pair, kept foraging. I managed to put my tripod rig in place without incidents and for the next 20 minutes this pair allowed me to take photos to my heart’s content, even walking up closer to me and passing in and out of sunny patches of ground; this in spite of me standing in the middle of the bush track without any form of disguise. This time I focused on the male, which is the bird to the right in this image; he has slightly more vivid colours than the female. Sometimes you just get lucky! Time of capture 09:15.
Incidentally, I am finding that with my Nikon D850 in DX-Mode and the 500mm f4 lens, I am better off sticking to presenting images in the lower resolution of 1400X1000 pix for the best quality. Using the 1.4X teleconverter in stead does give better quality, but this slows the autofocus down.
EquipmentNikon D850–DX Mode; GPS mounted, Nikkor AF-S 500mm f4G ED VR lens.
Technique: Camera rig support: Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head; standing in the open on bush track.
Exposure Mode: MANUAL 1/1250 sec at f6.3; ISO-640. Metering Mode: Center-Weighted; Focus Mode: AF-C & AF Area Mode: Dynamic, 9 points.
Post Processing: Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing, selecting file and Tif conversion; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2021 for resizing and cropping to 160%, selective sharpening and general post-processing inclusive of removal of halos; Topaz Pro plug-in DeNoise was used for blanket sharpening and mild noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for subspecies distribution confirmation, supplementary data and colour checks.
