| Comment | The depicted bird is a Western Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis chloronotus. The Western Silvereye is a green-backed subspecies of the widely distributed Silvereye subspecies of SA, the Eastern States and Tasmania. It is restricted to WA, where it is a declared pest of agriculture due to its ability to penetrate ripening fruit with its sharply pointed bill and then utilizing its brush-tipped tongue to rasp out all the juicy flesh inside; thus, it can destroy entire harvests. During the breeding season from September to January, the birds pair up and may raise 2 or 3 broods, but in the autumn they form quite large foraging flocks that roam widely and often venture into orchards and gardens, where they will consume olives, grapes, figs, plums and peaches with vigour, though they also eat a lot of small insects and nectar from flowering native plants. The Western Silvereye is more common in coastal regions, but it does have a large distribution area, occurring west of a line drawn roughly from Madura to Carnarvon. Kelmscott (GPS), WA.
