CommentWestern Treatment Plant is a one-stop shop for so many different birds, tiny, small, medium, large, ground, shore, water, aerial, raptor, migrants from the Arctic, Asia and New Zealand, you name them. In the case of the Arctic migrants, the latest report from the Arctic Council (reported in the news today) is that there’s a 20% decline in our visiting Arctic migrant shorebirds, so it might be wise to hurry up before it’s too late (and press all the governments along the East Asia-Australian Flyway to do more to protect their key habitats) (“Climate crisis behind drastic drop in Arctic wildlife populations – report”, Guardian, 20/5/21, https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/20/climate-crisis-drastic-drop-arctic-wildlife-populations-aoe). It’s the ideal spot for any birdwatching newcomer to make themselves acquainted with the extraordinary diversity of Australian birdlife. 270 species, roughly one-third of Australia’s some 800 species, have been sighted here. Here is one of the tinier but perkier ones, brimming over with chutzpah, a White-browed Scrubwren, tzzz-ing away on the top of some grey saltbush.
