CommentCrested Pigeons are beautiful birds indeed with their iridescent grey, blue, pink-suffused plumage, startling red eye circles, and elegant black crests. They are common enough in our parks and gardens but in flight they are even more breathtaking, as I recently witnessed in coming across a flock at Ryan’s Swamp in Werribee Treatment Plant. Launching themselves with their unusual whirring sound (created by their primary wing feathers), this group of a three took to the air from a nearby tree. With crests swept back, wings beautifully fanned, and pinkish breasts and shoulders caught by the light, they look like visiting angels reminding us that there is still grace and beauty to be found on our fragile planet, now under so much siege.
