CommentBanded Stilts are not only banded with a chestnut sash but also seem to always go round in bands, usually whole flocks. A fellow birdwatcher at Western TP tipped me off that he had just seen such a flock at the T-Section Lagoon, which is where I found them. These Stilts are not residents to any particular area but seem to move around salt lakes and salt marshes across Western Australia, South Australia and western parts of Victoria, depending on weather and rainfall. They were certainly doing everything together. They would work their way across the shallow waters, with lines of them all heading in the same direction. Perhaps this gives their prey less warning time to wriggle their way out of harms way. For those whose heads are not buried under the water, their long very slightly upturned rapier-like beaks are evident. All are in their chestnut-sashed adult breeding plumage. Some mystery surrounds where they actually breed but it is believed to be on remote inland mounds in salt lakes in South Australia and Western Australia. Around this time of year, it might be expected that they would be moving back inland, so perhaps I was lucky to catch them. It seems these “partisan” bands of Bandeds always keep together, always on the move, and only make their raids on any particular spot when the conditions are just right.
