CommentStilts and Stints. The tall and the tiny. Seen together one sunlit morning on the Lake Borrie shoreline, Western Treatment Plant. You would never guess that it is the tiny Red-necked Stints in the foreground, each weighing not much more than a matchbox, who are about to set off on a 13,000km exodus to their breeding grounds in the tundra of the Siberia Arctic, a few already beginning to show their reddish breeding plumage neck colour. They are plumping themselves up for their gruelling journey, a whole Stint flock systematically working their way across the unfurling mudflats as the tide recedes, feeding on molluscs, gastropods and crustaceans. The much larger immature White-headed Stilts in the background are the less adventurous travellers, angular pied nomads who travel around what remains of Australia’s once extensive wetlands, probably bumping into and coming eyeball to eyeball with our own Grey Nomads travelling around the country in RVs and campervans to sticky-beak at the wetland sites that have now become bucket-list tourist sites. Some shore birds might be stick-in-the-muds, but not these astonishing globe-trotting little Red-necked Stints, nor our continent-roaming Pied Stilts. That is the long and short of it. Tenacity matters.
