CommentThese Fairy Martins perching on the upper branch and Welcome Swallows lower down were part of large flocks enjoying themselves amongst the myriad mosquitoes currently swarming above the waters of Lake Borrie. They occasionally have to stop for rest amidst all the action, and this photo enables immediate comparison between the two species. Both have some rufous colouring on their crowns, but their tails are very different, especially the white rump of the Martins compared to the dark tails of the Swallows. The fanned tail of the arriving Martin also makes a major contrast with the dark forked tails of the Swallows. Thank heavens for our Fairy Martins and Welcome Swallows lest the swarms of Lake Borrie mosquitoes venture further afield for some feasting of their own
