CommentYet another kind of Tern sighted above Lake Borrie, most likely a White-winged Black Tern (possibly immature) in non-breeding plumage as indicated by its dark shoulder bars and small black "earphones" behind its eyes. It is distinguishable from a Little Tern by the breadth of its wingspan (some 66mm compared to a Little Tern's 50cm); and distinguishable from a Common Tern by its almost squared off rather than forked tail. Seeing them perched on rocks, you would scarcely imagine the extraordinary breadth of their wings. No doubt its impressive wingspan is of great help in making the most of prevailing winds to carry it forward towards Eurasian breeding grounds. This month or next is when they think about heading off, not to return until the spring.
