CommentJohn Gould, in his pioneering “Birds of Australia”, made it a point of always commenting on the personality of each bird, Ephthianura Albifrons included. Writing in the mid 1800s, he noted that the White-fronted Chat is “a most sprightly and active little bird…rather shy in its disposition , and when disturbed flies off with considerable rapidity to the distance of two or three hundred yards before it alights again”. Gould’s first encounter with them was on a Bass Strait island. Almost two centuries later, at Werribee Treatment Plant, our White-fronted Chats are still the same shy, sprightly bird of old, making it a little challenging to secure close-up portraits. Here is a male, the more conspicuous gender, in his neat black, white and grey attire, investigating some beaded glasswort at a saline pool. His female partner is in the background as they work their way across the salt flats around the pool. This was taken near the Little River Hide but whole flocks of White-fronted Chats may be found at the moment feasting on the myriads of midges and mosquitoes to be enjoyed along the Western Lagoon close to The Spit.
