CommentThis, my first sighting of a Whistling Kite, was noticed perching on a post along Paradise Road, the third of three species of Kite that I have seen in this vicinity over the last couple of weeks (the others being a Black Kite and a Black-Shouldered Kite), obviously “Kite Central” for the Werribee Treatment Plant. It has all the features of being a juvenile, especially the pronounced pale tips on the wing coverts and streaky underparts. It allowed me to come reasonably close before taking off. Stephen Debus (Birds of Prey of Australia) describes them as having an untidy look, and this youngster is no exception, looking very cool in its windswept plumage. A duck happened to be passing by, as they often do in this particular wetland paradise. The young Whistling Kite did, after checking me out, eventually and unhurriedly take off, and I followed it as it described ever increasing circles over the grasslands to eventually disappear in the distance.
