CommentOver the past two years, Coburg Lake Reserve has acquired a large Australian White Ibis colony on an island in the lake, with over 200 in residence at one time, with White Ibis now seen everywhere in the park. But very occasionally we see its Straw-Necked cousin appear also. They could not be more different in appearance and habits. The Straw-Necked Ibis seems a far quieter, less raucous, and more solitary bird, although they flock together at breeding time or in some other settings. In the morning sun, its extraordinary iridescent plumage becomes a rainbow of hues from dark blue to gold. The photo highlights the straw-coloured neck plumes that give it its common name.
