CommentI caught sight of a pair of Eastern Rosellas feeding on Milk Thistle in our local park. Concerned that I might scare them off if I approached too close, I approached out of their line of sight behind a large tree that stood between us, and then peeked at them around its trunk, now quite close to them. At the same time I steadied my camera against the tree trunk. So it was not quite hand held but rather tree held, thanks to my woody “monopod” that also served as a natural hide. This close up head and shoulders portrait is the result. It highlights the vivid reds and yellows of an Eastern Rosella’s head and front, and its almost human way of grasping the plant stem as it munches away on the seeds. Some of its bright and playful personality also comes through in the photo. Sad that Eastern Rosellas are amongst the native birds that are casualties of domestic cat damage to birdlife, with Gisela Kaplan (Bird Minds, 2015, p195) reporting that up to a quarter of native birds, including Eastern Rosellas, are at risk from domestic cats. In the case of Easterns, this is no doubt related to their feeding on plants at ground level. Certainly, within this particular part of Coburg Lake Reserve, I have indeed seen (and photographed) domestic cats on the hunt, even in broad daylight.
