CommentThis is a juvenile Black Kite that was one of a larger group I startled up beside Grills Road in the Werribee Treatment Plant. It is not so dark as an adult’s plumage since juveniles tend to be paler, with fawn coloured streaks and edges to their feathers. In this case, too, the late afternoon sun is backlighting the bird. Black Kites roost communally, and I watched as the group settled down in trees a little further up the road, no doubt after a long day’s hunting and scavenging.
