CommentImage specific (♀~03.03.21 BiL_OL2275948): Going to a small bushland precinct in Kensington, WA for a sunset session on a hot day, this capture of a female Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo was one of the highlights. The tiny bushland patch in an otherwise built-up area holds plenty of Jarrah trees, some Banksias and a few Marri Eucalypts. In particular the Jarrah Eucalypts were awash with feeding and resting Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos. The birds numbered in their hundreds, and some squealing youngsters were amongst them. Marri and Jarrah Eucalypts mature patchily, so you never quite know when these majestic black-cockatoos will be visiting; the nuts of the trees have to be just right, before the birds will start to feed on them. However, just about this time of the year, the Western Australian black-cockatoos between them begin to have exhausted fruiting Marri gum-nuts and change to Jarrah, which are fruiting later than the Marri. When a tree or a patch of trees are exhausted of their nuts, the birds will move on to another patch to forage. Late in the afternoon this image shows a female Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo about to land, wings and tail fully spread out and the feet coming forward to grab her perch. Time of capture 17:22.
EquipmentEquipment used: Olympus OM-D E-M1X on Velbon Neo Carmagne Carbon Tripod with Manfrotto Ball Head Art 498RC2. Camera settings: Exposure Program/Shooting Mode: ‘Manual’; shutter speed 1/1600 sec, f4.5 & ISO-800. Metering Mode: ‘CenterWeightedAverage’; Focus Mode: MANUAL and Drive: ‘Sequential shooting (1frame)’ & maximum burst rate habitually set to 12 to prevent filling up the buffer for which reason I also only shoot in RAW. Image Stabilizer on (S-SIS AUTO) & In-Camera-Sharpness +2. Post Processing: FastStone for viewing & sorting, Olympus Workspace for Tif conversion and metadata; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for selective work and general post-processing incl. removal of disturbing elements and slight halos; Topaz Pro plug-in DeNoise for blanket sharpening and noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for data, distribution confirmation and colour checks.
