CommentWith the new Victorian hard lockdown, we are back to being restricted to 2 hrs’ exercise no more than 5kms from home as our contact tracers struggle to regain control over a new strain of Covid-19 taking hold in our state. As we arrived at our local park, nostalgically masked up yet again, we were heartened to be welcomed by a carolling Butcherbird high above us, out of sight but obviously determined to raise our spirits with its beautiful flute-like stream of song. Next, around a bend, were the resident family of three Tawny Frogmouths, mother, father and juvenile, sleeping high up in an old Peppercorn tree. Our Frogmouths, at least, were not losing sleep over the pandemic. But it was not until a little further along that I was able to sight one of the park’s regular visitors, a Long-Billed Corella. Unlike previous encounters, when they were digging up roots and had their snouts covered in mud, this time the Corella was neat, tidy, and ready to pose for a formal full-length portrait. So here you can see its white not-muddy bill, bright red forehead headband with matching cravat, fluffy white and creamy plumage, fashionable blue spectacles, and, not least, the pale yellow on its undertail, illuminated by the morning sun. The complete Corella identikit, unmistakeable even for a novice birdwatcher like myself. And, as it looked down on us, the well-attired Corella, with head slightly cocked, seemed to be suggesting, “nothing to worry about, nothing to worry about” (because Corellas always repeat themselves). And I was ready to believe it.
