CommentThis was my own first sighting of Australia’s largest cormorant, the Great Cormorant, seen from a hide at Coolart Wetlands. It certainly did look imposing as it perched nonchalantly enough, with one enormous webbed foot flung over the dead branch, surveying the world with its gimlet blue eyes. A Grey Teal sails by on the waters behind. The Great Cormorant’s pronounced hooked bill, yellow facial skin, and large size distinguish it from the more common Black Cormorant. The absence of a white cheek patch suggests non-breeding plumage.
