| Comment | A not infrequent pleasure in walking along bush tracks is turning a bend and suddenly surprising a perched or feeding bird at quite close quarters. As often or not the equally surprised bird makes a rapid exit off to stage left or stage right, or stage up and skywards, before you can bring your camera to bear. Yet, just now and then, you meet a more phlegmatic individual, who stays put and decides at least to stay a little longer, at least until they have decided whether you are friend or foe. As we turned a corner along the Baldry Circuit Walk at Greens Bush in the Mornington Peninsula National Park, we came upon just such an unfazed bird in the shape of a male Australian King Parrot perched on a stump. The side profile of the male on the stump shows its stunningly deep red head and front and its contrasting deep green and blue-striped wings, a king among parrots indeed, and one that we don’t often see in the heart of Melbourne. | ||||||||||||||||||
