CommentAt this time of the year Marion Bay seems to be well known for large flocks of Red-necked Stints, one of which is just out of focus depth on the left here. At times I've also encountered one or two Curlew Sandpipers mingling in amongst the Stints and apparently calmly tolerated by the latter. Perhaps with both species in non-breeding colours the Sandpipers don't stand out too much among the Stints. The patterns and colours on this Sandpiper seem to closely match the illustration 'Juv worn, Oct-Nov' in the Australian Bird Guide.
EquipmentCanon EOS 5D IV
EF 400 f/4 DO IS II + 1.4x TC III, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF
Manual exposure, 1/1600 sec, f/7.1, ISO 320, handheld
Processing: Lightroom Classic for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop where moderate noise reduction was applied with Neat Image. The Shadows/Highlights control with custom settings was used to reveal detail in shadows around the birds' feet, and to slightly reduce background brightness. Final sharpening using Smart Sharpen was applied to the bird only, after size reduction to web submission dimensions.
LocationMarion Bay spit, southeastern Tasmania, Tasmania
