CommentRainbow Lorikeets are not named Trichoglossus Moluccanus for nothing. “Trichoglossus” derives from the Greek word for hair (Tricho) and tongue (Glossus). They are particularly noted for their “brush” tongues, all the better for licking up the nectar and pollen to be found in flowering gums, and one of the reasons they have been such a successful species in forests and parks across Australia’s east and south. In this photo, the Rainbow Lorikeet’s brush tongue is clearly visible as it feasts on the flowers of a Corymba Ficifolia in a street tree in Coburg. Never mind the Gods, this is nectar heaven for Lorikeets.
