CommentI heard and then saw, for the first time, a Grey Shrike-Thrush at Royal Park Wetlands about a month ago. Its beautiful pure ringing call, pee-pee-pee-who-ee, caught my attention then, and now I heard it call again, reaching me from across the waters. I walked around to see if I could find it. I did, but then it moved further on, and I followed, and it moved further on still, and finally landed on this branch, where it resumed its virtuoso performance, resounding throughout the whole wetlands. I am recalling that one of the pieces of advice to novice birdwatchers is to use your ears first, and then follow your ears, which is exactly what I did, with some success in photographing this beautiful virtuoso, caught mid-voice. Its black beak and white eye ring indicates it is a male. I have not seen a female nearby, so perhaps he is just a single male singing his heart out in the hope of attracting and winning a partner. Maybe I am just indulging in romantic anthropomorphism but there must be some reason for a Shrike-Thrush’s astonishing ability to project its call so far.
