CommentI was trying to photograph a pair of these birds which were perched on the well-known metal sculpture at Goulds Lagoon, having apparently commandeered it from the usually resident Kelp Gulls. However, I couldn't make the combination of angle, lighting and depth of field work, so ended up cropping out this portrait of one of the pair. I tried a number of compositions with more background out to the right of the bird, but for some reason this more centred framing seemed to work better, perhaps because the incredible emerald eye is such a focal point.
I debated between juvenile and adult non-breeding for ID, but went for the former based on the indistinct pale area behind the yellow facial skin, together with amount of brown in the overall appearance.
EquipmentCanon EOS 5D IV
EF 400 f/4 DO IS II + 1.4x TC III, at 560mm, centre spot servo AF
Manual exposure, 1/1600 sec, f/8, ISO 1250, handheld
Processing: Lightroom Classic for RAW conversion and initial adjustments, then Photoshop where noise reduction using Neat Image was applied at a moderate level to the bird to preserve detail, and at a heavier level to the background to eliminate the noise signature. Final sharpening using Smart Sharpen was applied to the bird only, following size reduction to web submission dimensions.
