CommentLately I have been making a point of heading for a rendezvous with a large Sheoak tree above Coburg Lake. It is one of the few places in a reserve dominated by large birds where smaller cousins can often be seen, perhaps because of the presence of inaccessible shrubbery nearby. Recently I have been seeing Silvereyes, Grey Fantails and Brown Thornbills there, working their way in and around the weeping casuarina stems. On this day, it was the turn of the Thornbills. When I arrived, I discovered a Wattlebird chasing a Thornbill around the tree for reasons best known to itself (or to more experienced twitchers than myself). Thornbills may appear to be tiny timorous Milquetoasts but this one had no trouble losing their Wattlebird tormentor by zooming through dense thickets where even a Wattlebird might find the going tough. A few moments after the Wattlebird gave up the chase and flew the scene, the photo shows the unperturbed Brown Thornbill taking off from a lower branch to continue its accustomed rounds of the Sheoak tree. The Brown Thornbill’s characteristic reddish forehead, deep red iris, and dark streaking on its throat and breast can be seen in the photo. The image conveys some of a Thornbill’s astonishing quickness and nimbleness, no doubt very necessary when larger adversaries are out to make trouble for you.
