CommentHere is a Pacific Black Duck fledgling being watched over by one of its parents. Which is just as well given the predators that might enjoy duckling for breakfast in this vicinity, such as raptors, water rats, foxes, or feral cats. Or, indeed, domestic moggies out and about for the simple pleasure of hunting. In the case of our own small band of macho human hunters, who saunter out oh so bravely with their lethal high powered toys to mow down defenseless birds during the Victorian duck-hunting season, renewed yet again in 2020 by the Victorian Government (compared to bans in WA, Qld and NSW), it is difficult to comprehend what pleasure they find in destroying such beautiful creatures, many of whom are merely injured and left to die slow deaths. Sean Dooley of Birdlife Australia questioned the decision to go ahead with this year’s hunt after the recent bushfire devastation to birdlife, and the evidence of a 90% reduction in waterbird numbers in Eastern Australia from about 1 million in the early 1980s to around 200,000 now (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-12/victorian-drought-threatens-duck-hunting-season/11946282). In the words of our First People’s lament over what has been, and continues to be, done to Australia: “Poor fellow my country!”.
