CommentI noticed three or four tiny birds moving quickly from cone to cone in a she-oak tree on the north bank of the Coburg Lake. I was expecting to see the Grey Fantails I had seen there before but, no, they were unmistakably Silvereyes. So sprightly that they were hard to get a fix on but fortunately this one landed for a slightly longer moment on some stems. They can vary greatly in their plumage colours. This one has some of the russet flank colours that might indicate the ssp lateralis subspecies. Despite their small size, many species of Silvereye can migrate over thousands of kilometers,. According to Tim Lowe (“Where Song Began”), “The first of these little green birds burst onto the scene less than 2 million years ago, evolving at speeds unknown in birds before it…Biologists have compared them to Vikings and Polynesians, because epic journeys gave way to settled living. White-eye success turns on confidence over water, flock travel, rapid breeding and flexible diets”.
