CommentTaking a track less travelled in the bush surrounding Royal Park Wetlands, I startled this Red-Rumped Parrot, which flew up and landed on a branch just in front of me. Perhaps I had disturbed it sleeping because it took a little while to look around and take me in. I had some difficulty in definitely identifying it because of the apparent absence of the red rump but after enquiring on our Birdlife Photography forum bird identification category almost immediately received helpful confirmation from Ian Wilson that it is indeed a Red-Rumped Parrot, an adult male, with well worn plumage, and probably in a moulting phase. I had not expected to see such a beautiful bird close up, weathered feathers or not, and it certainly made my day. The morning sun has caught and highlighted its distinctive male yellow breast and the wonderful shades of blue and green on its head and back. No doubt it was attracted to the location by the grasses close by with their spring growth and heavy laden of seeds.
