CommentIt is not only Pardalotes who like a lick of lerp. As Tim Low notes in his article for Birdlife Australia, “Exuding Abundance”, even larger birds, such as Currawongs, enjoy this sweet-tasting psyllid excretion on eucalypt leaves, up to 60 per cent sugar (http://www.birdlife.org.au/australian-birdlife/detail/exuding-abundance). Here is a sweet-toothed (or should I say sweet-beaked) Pied Currawong that I found one morning leaping from gum leaf to gum leaf to slurp on the lerp. Enjoying his or hers sugar fix for the day. The lerp can be seen as the tiny white blobs of sugary icing stuck on the leaves. The Currawong’s method was to slide their beak along the edge of each leaf to dislodge and suck up the lerp. The white base to the tail distinguishes it as a Pied Currawong, and the yellow eyes as an adult.
