CommentThis would be the closest I have been to these birds. I was laying among some low samphire with a few of these birds offshore when more birds arrived and joined them, I didn't manage focus till they were about to land so got some shots with wings akimbo. Tentatively suggest this bird is a female due to bill length and that she has recently arrived back from breeding grounds. There is little difference in plumage coloration from breeding to non breeding but my assessment made both from flight feathers being in good condition and the fact that numbers have increased since earlier in July and that some of those that landed soon had heads beneath their wings. This suggesting they are tired after a long flight. Females also leave their breeding grounds prior to males, they are left to tend their brood till they are old enough to fend for themselves.
