CommentTwo White Ibis looking out from a palm tree on an island in Coburg Lake, their long curved beaks mirroring the curves of the palm fronds. No doubt they feel very at home here, indeed their whole large flock has settled themselves in at the island. “This will be the place for a village” said explorer John Batman on 7th June 1835 as he sailed up the Yarra to where Melbourne now stands (albeit cordoned off from the rest of the country). “This is the place for a village”, say the White Ibis, as they survey their new adopted home, much to the dismay of some of the long term resident lake inhabitants, our Black Swans, Chestnut Teals, Nankeen Night Herons, Australian Wood Ducks, and Eastern Swamphens.
