CommentThe image is that of a female Southern Emu-Wren ssp. westernensis. 'For several months I had been targeting the elusive Southern Emu-Wren in the Perth Region. This time I was alerted to its presence in marshlands at Island Point by Harvey Estuary, somewhat south of my normal stomping grounds. There, on a dull day a pair of these minute and jittery birds was indeed to be found where the given directions took me, and I found them right by the water’s edge in low saltbush, where they were hunting sand flies with a troop of Splendid Fairy-Wrens. I did not manage just one decent capture here, but on two occasions that morning the female briefly broke cover near me in between reeds, and on just this one occasion did I get a clear view of her. I managed 4 or five images, and this is the better one. On the day, I only ever succeeded in getting a single, partly obscured reference shot of the male down low in between saltbush.'
