I captured this acrobatic bird as he clung to the verticle branches to to see what I was doing. There is a little too much underside although I feel capturing a bird in his natural environment, in reasonable detail, is worth keeping. I sometimes procrastinate between ‘soft’ and ‘sharp’ when processing (Lightroom Classic). I suspect prioritising ‘aperture’ rather than ‘speed’ as I have done here, may give me a softer look out of the camera. I also feel shooting a telephoto at full stretch rather than getting closer doesn’t help. I see great examples on this site of soft detailed photographs.. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Tim Van Leeuwen	2020-08-03 23:21:29	Hi Gregory, thanks for taking the time to submit your image, it will help you as well as others that read your post. Firstly congratulations on capturing this lovely honeyeater in such fine detail. You have managed to capture the entire bird sharply, good head position, engaging eye and correctly exposed. The images you decide to keep or delete is an issue we all have to deal with as we learning our craft. I am now will only keep about 15-20 images per 1000 taken because I am looking to keep only the very best images of a type of style I am looking for on the day. Making the transition from auto to Manual is the most critical step in leaning the interplay between f stop selection, iso and speed. At our Conference in Perth last year I was really taken by the soft images taken by Georgina Steyter. Take a look at Georgina's 2017 Tom Oliver award e-book in the Tom Oliver award section above. This leads me to the advice I will give you Gregory. You can obviously take nice sharp images and you are rightly asking, is there more for me? I would encourage you to have a good think about what style inspires you? What sort of images make you sit back after reviewing them on your computer and think, wow, did I take that? Developing your own style requires the courage to experiment. I go out into the field with photographers who have their "pet" settings and pretty much shoot the same settings at all birds all day with little variation. Gregory, look at the sort of images that inspire you and study them ie the time of day, fstop settings, speed, are the images in flight or low to the ground etc etc. The benefit of reviewing images on our website is that all the EXIF information is reviewable so take time to review and understand the interplay between the settings. Your question about prioritising ‘aperture’ rather than ‘speed comes down entirely to what style you are wanting to shoot and ultimately to be know for. Fstop over speed - the choice is yours! I have read Georgina's inspiring 'Tom Oliver' Award e-book previously and will make time to review it again, it was an extraordinary submission and most helpful to me. I have been recently asked to be involved in a book that showcases the wildlife at an exclusive precinct in Sydney and will take this opportunity to challenge myself to shoot in manual for this project... we all need a goal. Your comments regarding style are important and for me as a relatively new member of BLP, felt I was required to strip style away in favour of images that are true to life. Perhaps I need to find a way of showing that within the confines of BLP preferences. I appreciate all your comments and thank you for taking the time to review my image.
