CommentI've tried a more creative treatment here, although done nothing special in processing. I liked the veil effect over the out of focus head of the bird. I was fortunate to spend more than an hour with this bird as it moved around the campground, apparently aware but unfazed by me and my partner's presence. The bird sometimes came quite close - within 3 metres or so and spent virtually all its time foraging. The main feature here is the remarkable tail. All 16 tail feathers are visible: the 12 filamentous feathers, the 2 spectacular banded lyrate feathers and the two median wiry feathers. The only downside to this session was the horrendous mosquitoes, in their hundreds and voracious.
EquipmentCanon 80D with EF 100-400mm Mark 2, handheld at 321mm
1/160 sec, f7.1, ISO 2000. Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction (at about 50% of default values). A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where further noise reduction was applied globally. Global lighting adjustments to lighten shadows, darken highlights and increase midtone contrast as appropriate.Sharpened after resizing for upload.
