CommentNominate race pusilla (very small) from coastal and sub-coastal forests of se Australia. The red iris indicates this is an adult, sexes alike.

While confined at home I have been trying for some close-up pictures of our smallest birds. To capture this image I used two synchronized flashes, one mounted on the camera to provide illumination of the subtle tones in the feather structure, the other was mounted to the right side to provide some illumination which produces micro-shadows in the feather detail and enhanced micro-contrast. The exposure time was chosen to capture enough ambient light to show some out of focus background.
EquipmentCanon 90D + 600 mm f/4 III with 2 x 600EX-RT flashes, tripod, portable hide.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/9, 1/160 sec, ISO 320, 1/16 flash power.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in. Colour calibration using X-Rite ColorChecker.
LocationBelgrave Heights, Victoria
