CommentQuietly feeding amongst some grey plovers, this Great Knot flew in to have a rest from peeling molluscs of the rocks at low tide. The endangered Great Knot is a grey-coloured wader with a slightly down-turned bill, the upper mandible being just longer than the lower one. Seen in profile in non-breeding plumage, it is similar in size and appearance to the grey plover, but it has a much longer, more delicate bill, and the legs are clearly pale olive green as opposed to slate grey. When viewed from the front, its belly appears white rather than striped. The species’ global numbers have declined rapidly in recent years, and it is suggested that an entire population using South Korea as a pit stop has perished due to land reclamation. Being a specialist bivalve mollusc feeder, the Great Knot is highly dependant on suitable stop-over habitats. Breeding in the northern hemisphere it uses the East Asian-Australasian flyway during migration and winters in Australia along the coastlines and in inland locations near Alice Springs. Arriving in September it leaves during March. Woodman Spit; GPS. Status (2016): Endangered
