CommentVisiting Rosalind Park in central Bendigo early one morning, amidst all the screeching of cockatoos high in surrounding gums and the harsh calls of some wattlebirds, I suddenly heard a beautiful flutelike call and mellifluous warbling from a nearby tree and discovered its source: an immature Pied Butcherbird, most certainly the Maria Callas of all song birds. I was able to catch it in full throat. The photo shows the distinctive hook at the end of the beak. The dark brown plumage, fluffiness of the breast feathers, and pinkish gape, are characteristic of a juvenile.
EquipmentNikon Z7 with Nikon 300mm PF f/4 telephoto and Nikon 1.7 Teleconverter, ISO 2500, 500mm, f/6.7, 1/200th. Handheld.
