Comment'Whimbrel with Crab'. The Whimbrel is a medium size, dark curlew; however it is a big bird for a shorebird. Visiting Australia each summer from their northern hemisphere breeding grounds, they can be seen along most sheltered coasts, avoiding the coastline of the Great Australian Bight. The breeding takes place in the tundras of Siberia and Alaska and across much of subarctic Eurasia, the southernmost breeding grounds being in Scotland. Arriving in Australia from late August, it winters here, not starting to leave again until April. While in Australia, they forage by probing for worms and molluscs in sand or mud and by grabbing prey items directly from the surface. Besides, they will hunt for insects and crustaceans among rocks and coral and pick fish and crabs from rock pools. They also seek out food items from washed-up seaweed, including seeds and vegetable matter. The Whimbrel is a gregarious species and associate with other waders often roosting in flocks. Camera settings: Exposure Program/Shooting Mode: ‘Manual’; shutter speed 1/1000 sec, f6.3 & ISO-500. Metering Mode: ‘CenterWeightedAverage’; Focus Mode: ‘Continous-AF’ with the AF-system further set to ‘AF-Target Mode’ with a target group of 9 sensors (3x3). Drive: ‘Sequential shooting (1frame)’ in ‘Continuous Low’. Maximum burst rate habitually set to 12 to prevent filling up the buffer for which reason also I only shoot in RAW. Image Stabilizer on (S-SIS AUTO); In-camera Sharpness +2. (These settings are also the combination I favour for birds in flight; it took a lot of experimentation with the OM-D E-M1X/300 mm F4 lens combo to find a merger of settings suitable for this noble discipline.) Olympus Workspace for metadata; FastStone for viewing & sorting; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for post-processing; Topaz Pro plug-ins Sharpen AI, DeNoise AI & Studio 2 for sharpening and noise control. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for identification, supplementary data and colour checks.
