CommentThe Red-Kneed Dotterel is a rather rotund plover with quite long legs. It is found in open wetlands and around shallow freshwater lakes surrounded by wet grassland, where expanses of drying out mud come about as flooded areas dry out. The species is nomadic, following rains and generally occupying a niche within Australian habitats that dictates a rather random and short nesting period. The main breeding season falls from October to January, but rainfall may bring about their breeding almost anywhere and anytime, when conditions become suitable. When nesting, a pair will scrape a small depression in the ground sheltered by a bush and line it with grass, or they might use an old nest of another species. The Red-kneed Dotterel is an omnivorous and gregarious species and forage in small groups, often in the company of other waders. Native to Australia, it has been recorded almost everywhere, except for the harshest interior and inland Tasmania. Wellard Wetlands; GPS. Status: Least Concern
