Comment | I have seen the Little Egret in this stance quite often, and going through BirdLife galleries, I found no other photo of this egret in that pose. Hence I submit this image, though it lacks detail in the whites somewhat. The Little Egret uses this stance following stirring up of the bottom with one foot in order to dislocate prey. Then, standing erect and frozen stiff, it stretches up tall to spot panicking critters, and only when it has fixed on a suitable prey item, will stalking begin. The species is common over large parts of Australia, avoiding only the harsh interior and the coastlines along The Great Australian Bight and south-west Tasmania. Mainly a bird of wetlands, estuaries, mangroves and tidal coastlines, it is very adaptable and can be found along rivers and around freshwater lakes and swamps, too. A community breeder, frequently with other species of waterbird, in the Perth area it has been seen colonially breeding with cattle egrets. Bibra Lake; GPS. Status: Least Concern | ||||||||||||||||||
